The Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) congratulates Nkosikazi Nomandla Mhlawuli on his historic election as President of the National House of Traditional Rulers (NHTL) and Khoi-San Chiefs on Tuesday, January 25, 2022.

The unopposed election of Nkosikazi Mhlawuli as the first female traditional leader in this role signals the NHTL’s commitment to South Africa’s democratic promise to empower the country’s women. This recognition by the NHTL testifies to his leadership skills up to the task.

The NHTL has always been perceived as patriarchal and not open to transformation, especially in terms of gender. The committee congratulates him on this great step in what has traditionally been the domain of male primogeniture and a bastion of patriarchy in South Africa. The election of a female leader in this important traditional organization will bring a different set of skills and perspectives that are needed in our current society.

A number of societal issues plague communities, particularly in rural areas, which require the intervention of traditional leaders. The committee hopes that the election of Nkosikazi Mhlawuli will lead to innovations in the search for solutions to these problems. The committee wishes Nkosikazi Mhlawuli every success in his role.
