By Ruben Morales Iglesias: On Friday morning, the Sayab Farmers Group of San Antonio in Cayo District will become Belize’s newest co-operative and will be called Sayab Farmers Co-operative Society Limited, according to the Belize Department of Co-operatives, under the Ministry of Agriculture. Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE).

The Sayab Farmers Group has been working for some time now to become a cooperative and just two weeks ago they held their latest training session to achieve this goal.

Registration is underway at Sayab Farms on Friday at 10:30 a.m., said Gareth Murillo, registrar of cooperatives.

“Their members are women, youth and farmers,” said Luis Pook, director of communications at the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise.

“They farm using greenhouses. They have six covered structures where they have a variety of different vegetables. They have lettuce, cabbage, carrots, peppers and herbs. They make sorrel wine. They package their products and plan to have their own labels.

“They have ties to several resorts that buy their products directly from them,” Pook said.

Pook said Sayab farmers are well prepared for this move as they produce value-added products such as wines and sauces, which other cooperatives do not yet do. Pook said that as a cooperative, Sayab Farms will be able to better market their products.
