The Santa Cruz cooperative in Toledo receives sewing machines from the Rapid Response to COVID-19 and 2020 Floods in Belize project

By Ruben Morales Iglesias“Ten sewing machines were donated today to the Mayan Arts and Crafts Cooperative of Santa Cruz Hibiscus in the Toledo District,” the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Agriculture said. ‘Company (MAFSE).

“The event was successful thanks to the project, Cooperative Rapid Response to COVID-19 and 2020 Floods in Belize.”

The Minister of Agriculture, Jose Abelardo Mai, participated in the handover ceremonies of the Rapid Response Project.

“The Co-operatives Rapid Response to COVID19 and the 2020 Floods in Belize project was undertaken by Belize Enterprise for Sustainable Technology (BEST) and the Department of Cooperatives with funding from the GEF Small Grants Program UNDP, Belize Enterprise for Sustainable Technology, and Co-operatives Department,” Co-operatives Registrar Gareth Murillo said.

“The Santa Cruz Hibiscus Mayan Arts and Crafts Cooperative, whose members are all women, is involved in handmade arts and crafts products such as the basket, the cuxtal, the earrings, bracelets, embroidery and sewing of traditional clothing,” MAFSE said.

Members of the Santa Cruz cooperative planted trees to commemorate the event and help reduce the impact of climate change.

Minister Mai was accompanied during the handover by the Minister of Rural Transformation, Community Development, Local Government, Oscar Requena; MAFSE Director General Servulo Baeza; Director of Agriculture, Dr. Victoriano Pascual; Co-op Registrar Gareth Murillo; Michelle Longsworth, acting CEO of Belize Enterprise for Sustainable Technology; GEF UNDP Small Grants Program National Coordinator, Leonel Requena; members of the Hibiscus Maya Arts and Crafts Cooperative; and technical officers from the Ministry of Agriculture, Department of Cooperatives and Resilient Rural Belize.
