Tinubu chooses Christian running mate suicidal – Support group

National Chairman, South West Agenda for Asiwaju 2023, Senator Adedayo Adeyeye, has warned a former Federation Government Secretary, Babachir Lawan, of an attack on the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate in the general election of 2023, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, on the latter’s decision to choose another Muslim and former Governor of Borno State, Kashim Shettima, as his running mate.

Adeyeye, who said Babachir is Tinubu’s longtime friend, urged the ex-SGF to stop throwing the APC presidential candidate “under the bus”.

Speaking to selected journalists in Abuja on Saturday, Adeyeye, a former Minister of State for Public Works, said it would be political suicide for Tinubu to choose a Christian from the North as his running mate.

Adeyeye said: “Let’s make a point, especially in the northeast and northwest, they constitute about 90% of the population: I correct myself.

“I’m not talking about the whole North because the Middle Belt is another problem. But you know that we cannot choose a candidate from the Centre-North because the national president (of the APC, Senator Abdullahi Adamu) is already from there.

“So if you now end up with two areas, which are the North East and the North West, these two areas, the population of Muslims is almost 90%, as far as they believe that politics is part of of their religion it would be suicidal for any politician to disregard that feeling and that sentiment and then use that sentiment to go and get a Christian in that area You are asking that the majority of the population not vote for you.

“So if you want to win the votes of these two critical geopolitical areas. You must have someone on this ticket from this region – either as number 1 or number 2 on this ticket; you must have a muslim from both places if you want to win their votes.

“I think reality dictated the choice of Kashim Shettima. It’s not by feeling; it is the fact that the first duty after receiving the APC flag is to win the APC election. And to win this election, reality dictates that you must choose a Muslim from the North West or the North East, but preferably from the North East because the North West had a fair share of the presidency.

The leader of SWAGA, APC is not “for fun but it is” for serious business.

Lawal had called a “disastrous mistake” the choice by the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate for the 2023 elections, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, of Kashim Shettima as his running mate.

Lawal noted that although Tinubu remained “a very good man”, a great listener, humble and “very generous in cash and kind, especially where it could advance his political interests”, he realized that it was in the nature of power that “sycophants and little dogs have the most influence over leaders with such character traits.”

The ex-SGF bared his wits in a lengthy essay obtained by The PUNCH in Abuja on Tuesday night.

Lawal, again Thursday in an interview with Arise Television, condemned Tinubu’s decision to show up with another Muslim on the APC ticket. He described the Muslim-Muslim ticket as a direct attack on Christians, noting that the party has produced a Muslim presidential candidate and most party officials are all Muslims.

This, Lawal said, had caused an outcry from the party’s Christian community.

Reacting to Lawal, Adeyeye said: “My message to him is that he should calm down. He is a statesman and a former statesman should seek solutions to problems, not try to fan the fire; try to turn it off. And being a longtime friend of Asiwaju, he shouldn’t be the one to drop him under the bus every time. You drop your friend under the bus; that’s not how you’re a good friend. Yours is to find a way, if the fire is burning, to see how you can put it out, not fan it. This is my message for him.
