The Dr Jacob Breslow controversy erupted when it was revealed that when he was a grad student in 2011, he gave a presentation at a conference at a company in Maryland. The Times of London reveals that Breslow spoke at a conference with the Maryland-based B4U-ACT, joined as co-founder in 2003 by Michael Melsheimer, who died later in 2010. In his 2011 presentation before the B4U-ACT conference titled ‘Sexual Alignment: Criticizing Sexual Orientation, Pedophilia and DSM V’, Breslow said: “Allowing a minor, undiagnosable form of attraction is exciting because it potentially creates a sexual or political identity through which activists, academics and clinicians can begin to better understand the underage people who are attracted to them.” Breslow’s connection to a pedophile organization has been revealed.

He continued: “This understanding can displace the stigma, fear and abjection that are naturalized as being attached to attracted underage people and can alter the terms by which non-normative sexualities are known. Further, this article argues that this distinction is potentially another step towards the complete overhaul of paraphilias within the DSM – a step that historically and theoretically stems from the suppression of homosexuality.” Breslow is also Associate Professor of Gender and Sexuality at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). LSE states on its website that “Dr Jacob Breslow is currently on sabbatical until January 2023”.

Following his resignation, Breslow said in a press release, according to the Times, “I unequivocally condemn child sexual abuse. My job is to protect marginalized children and young people, not to expose them to harm. I had understood in 2011 that B4U-ACT was an organization that promotes treatments to prevent pedophile offending. I thought at the time that the purpose of the conference was to enable better treatments and interventions that prevent harm to children Otherwise I would not have attended the symposium. I have not been affiliated with B4U-ACT since. I have decided to resign as Trustee of Mermaids as I did not want to distract from the good work that makes the charity to help transgender and gender diverse children.
