Every December 1, we celebrate World AIDS Day. This day is an opportunity to support actors in the fight against HIV and to improve understanding of HIV as a global public health problem.

PAHO Theme: End inequalities. End AIDS. End pandemics.
The joint PAHO / UNAIDS 2021 campaign is based on the slogan “End inequalities. End AIDS. End pandemics ”. The objective is to communicate on the importance of equitable access to health services and the importance of strengthening actions at the level of primary health care, with particular emphasis on combined HIV prevention and treatment services. , as well as promoting working with communities to reach those most vulnerable to HIV and other pandemics.
The campaign calls for urgent action to maintain essential HIV prevention and treatment services that the pandemic and the COVID-19 response have weakened in countries, but the pandemic has also left useful lessons. For example, dispensing medication for several months at a time, performing HIV self-testing, and using telemedicine have been shown to be effective strategies that can be incorporated into normal routines.
PAHO / WHO and UNAIDS urge end inequalities to end AIDS
New HIV infections in Latin America did not decrease from 2010 to 2020, while reduction in the Caribbean is not on track to meet targets. Accelerating the introduction and scale-up of new prevention and treatment methods for the population most at risk is essential to get back on track and overcome the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic .
